Club History

Through the diligent efforts of your fellow students, Duke University now has its own Water Ski Club. Started only 4 years ago, we are still a relatively small organization. However, we are growing rapidly as word of our existence spreads across campus and we are always looking for new members. The club gained official status during the fall of 1999 and we already have a great competitive team. Best of all, we recently bought a 2001 Ski Nautique for the team.

This club is for ANYONE and EVERYONE. That means that absolutely NO experience is necessary to join. We currently have members with almost every level of skiing ability and we have taught several first timers. This club was created as a fun outlet for all Duke students and therefore you should not be hesitant to join simply because you do not feel that you are a good skier. Everyone has to learn at some point.

With the purchase of our new boat and the generous equipment donations, we are looking forward to having excellent upcoming tournament seasons. We developed a reasonable operating plan, including dues, who can drive the boat, and how you sign up for a seat on the boat, that will allow maximum usage of our equipment without a loss of control over the club. Anyone interested in helping with this is encouraged to contact the club's president. As always, the Coble Ski School in Lillington, NC has graciously offered to let any club member ski behind their boats and use their equipment at a discounted rate.

The Duke Ski Team officially joined the South Atlantic Conference the fall season of 1999. As an official member, we can continue testing our skills against the likes of UNC-CH, UNC-C, Clemson, Auburn, Alabama, and the rest of the conference. The SAC holds four tournaments each season (fall and spring). These tournaments are three events including slalom, trick and jump with two divisions A and B for both women and men. Everyone is encouraged to participate. While the tournaments do feature some of the top national college skiers, many of the competitors simply come for the party and stay for the skiing. We hope you do too!
