ABOUT THE WIND SYMPHONY

The Duke University Wind Symphony, directed by Pam Halverson, presents formal concerts, open-air garden concerts, and an annual Viennese Ball.

The Wind Symphony has a long tradition of leadership in the college band field. The ensemble is composed largely of non-majors (both undergraduate and graduate) who wish to challenge themselves by performing the finest wind and percussion literature at a high level of artistry.  The Wind Symphony gives at least four formal concerts each year.  Details about performance events can be found under the Schedule.

The Wind Symphony's repertoire explores musical styles from the Medieval Period to the 21st Century.  Programs feature chamber works and pieces that employ the lush sonorities of the large symphonic ensemble.  Compositions by such composers as Gabrieli, Bach, Mozart, Shostakovich, Holst, Grainger, Sousa, Gershwin, Ives, and those writing for the medium today are performed.  The Wind Symphony has a rich tradition of excellence; in 1995, the ensemble hosted a residency with the renowned conductor and composer Karel Husa.  The Wind Symphony has also performed with guest soloists including Susan Fancher, Vincent Abado, John Marcellus, Stan Getz and the Canadian Brass.

FALL 2008 AUDITIONS

In the fall semester, auditions are held one week before the first week of
classes.  All interested wind and percussoin players are asked to audition for
the Wind Symphony.  Please prepare a solo of your choice that demonstrates lyrical and technical facility.  You may also be asked to sight-read.  Please contact Director Halverson (pamweasel@prodigy.net) for more details.
