History
The Wind Symphony used to tour Vienna during the spring semester each year. One of the traditions that Wind Symphony members brought back with them was the Viennese Ball. Running since 1974, the Duke Wind Symphony Viennese Ball is the longest-running student-led event of its kind in the country.

Viennese Ball Tradition The Viennese Ball features a Polka Band and a Waltz Orchestra led by our students. Dress is semi-formal to formal, and while a small group every year comes in full traditional dress, such elaborate attire is not necessary. In addition to open dancing to the live music, there are a number of special events and features, including:

  • A selection of light refreshments
  • Interactive dances for everyone to join
  • A number of dance demonstrations given by the Duke Ballroom Dance Club and Triangle Vintage Dance
  • A performance of the traditional Viennese Promenade by members of the Wind Symphony
