New event with Sharon Hill!

4/27/09: You asked for her, and so we've brought her back! Sharon Hill, the etiquette guru of Sharon Hill International, will lead a session on how to make a good impression and be an effective networker. Free dinner! Come get pumped up for the conference season.

Triangle-wide women's networking event coming up in January!

12/17/08: We've partnered with ScienceOnline'09, a science communication and blogging conference, to host a huge, Triangle-wide networking extravanganza! We're expecting women from biotech companies, government agencies, universities, as well as many local women's groups and academic organizations. Come and meet women with common interests, find future collaborators, and identify possible mentors! The night will culminate in a talk by Rebecca Skloot, a freelance science writer whose work has appeared in Popular Science, NPR, and The New York Times. She'll be speaking about the history and ethics behind the HeLa cell line.

Abstract writing workshop coming up with Ann Motten

11/20/08: We've got another career development workshop coming up the week after Thanksgiving: Abstract Writing Do's and Don'ts, Thu, Dec 4, 12-1:30, MSRB 001. Ann Motten, Dept. of Chemistry, leads us through how to organize and write successful abstracts. She's also accepting early submissions of abstracts to critique. So submit your own abstract early and it may be chosen as an example that we workshop together.

10/16/08: Can you believe it? There was a run on pink fabric at the manufacturer, so our line of pink totes are unfortunately delayed. We won't be able to deliver them at the Oct 21 event, but we are still taking orders. We expect to have them delivered to you during the second week of Nov. We apologize for the delay.

10/13/08: We've just gotten the design proof for our pink totes and they look great. They're big (20" x 16" x 6"), useful, and pink! Order your tote now! We'll also be selling them at our Oct. 21 breast cancer research event.

WiSE participates in Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

10/9/08: Along with our symposium on breast cancer research and prevention WiSE is raising funds this Oct and Nov to sponsor a Duke team in next year's Race for the Cure. We'll be selling $5 pink WiSE totes with all proceeds going to this worthy cause. Pre-order a tote here. They will be available at the Oct. 21 symposium and online. We'll mail them out as soon as we get them in!

Kathy Kleiman event next week!

9/16/08: We're looking forward to our next two events with Kathy Kleiman, an extraordinary female computer scientist, attorney, historian, and documentarian. WiSE is lucky to host a breakfast with her prior to her Distinguished Lecture event with RENCI. Please join us! RSVP for the breakfast early, the event is limited to the first 10 respondents.

8/18/08: We're gearing up for a great fall semester of events. We have a whole suite of web publishing and abstract writing workshops, as well as a new mentoring breakfasts program. Also, we're excited to host Kathy Kleiman, a historian, computer programmer, and documentary filmmaker before her talk on the women pioneers of computing.

3/11/08: We want to highlight our next event. We've got a wonderful group of panelists to speak on their altruistic/alternative careers. Panelists include: Rochelle Schwartz-Bloom, Director of RISE (Raising Interest in Science Education); Bora Zivkovic, Online Community Coordinator at the Public Library of Science ONE; Anne Casper, Post-doc in the SPIRE teaching and research post-doc program; Nirupama Sista, Associate Director of Science Facilitation at Family Health International; and Subhashini Chandrasekharan, Post-doc in the Center for Public Genomics

1/28/08: We've added a bunch of social events to our calendar in addition to our usual lunchtime discussions. Also, look forward to our distinguished speaker event with Valerie Young on how to overcome the "imposter" syndrome.

Great events in 2008!

1/14/08: We have a great series of events lined up this spring starting with an assertiveness workshop with Kacie Wallace. We'll be posting the details of all our events soon, so stay tuned. In addition to our usual lunchtime discussions and our annual distinguished speaker, we'll be adding more social events to the calendar. Please join us for a good semester.

Introducing our new programmer, Phoebe Lee!

10/22/07: We are very happy to introduce our new WiSE Program Coordinator, Phoebe Lee! Phoebe is a graduate student in the Molecular Genetics and Microbiology program. Phoebe won us over with her past involvement with WiSE and her broad vision for new events, so our next year is looking great. Tong Ren, our current programmer, will be staying on until the end of the semester to help with the leadership transition. Thanks, Tong! Welcome, Phoebe!
