Shaking up computer history: Finding the women of ENIAC

A group of skilled mathematicians programmed the first all-electronic programmable computer, the ENIAC, but they were overlooked in the annals of computer history for one primary reason: they were women. Kathy Kleiman, historian, computer programmer, telecom lawyer and head of the ENIAC Programmers Project, will speak about these women -- whom ABC News referred to as "Rosie the Riveter meets Bill Gates" -- and about her efforts to produce a film documenting their unique and unsung accomplishments at the Fall 2008 Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) Distinguished Lecture. Come join WiSE for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To help promote awareness, WiSE will host a panel discussion highlighting new advances in the screening and prevention of breast cancer with special focus on epidemiologic research of breast cancer occurrence as well as on approaches to maintaining breast health. Joellen Schildkraut, Professor of Community and Family Medicine,Vicky Seewaldt, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Breast Cancer Prevention Program, and Liz Stoioff, currently with the Duke student health center, will be leading the panel. In this interactive workshop, we will explore basic design principles, standard conventions and best practices for maintaining a professional web presence. This is the first of two workshops in a series; in the follow-up session, you will be able to get hands-on experience with Dreamweaver. Learn how to implement the design tips from WiSE's previous event on online portfolios. This hands-on session is designed to teach beginners the basics of creating a website using Dreamweaver with pre-created templates and publishing it to the Duke personal web server. How do you write a concise, clear, and convincing abstract? Ann Motten (Duke, Dept. of Chemistry) guides us through the art of abstract writing. We'll learn the major components of successful abstracts, then workshop our way through several examples. We'll also have a chance to critique our own abstracts, and tips will be given for good format, style, and organization. For added impact, submit your abstract early by Tuesday, Dec 2, 5pm, and have Dr. Motten use it as one of the examples!

WiSE is partnering with ScienceOnline'09, a national science blogging conference, to host a Triangle-wide networking event for women scientists, engineers, educators, researchers, science writers, and students. This event also includes many of our local women's groups and promises to be a networking extravaganza. Following a networking reception with free light eats and drinks, there will be a presentation by our guest speaker, Rebecca Skloot, a freelance science writer, contributing editor at Popular Science, and correspondent for PBS's NOVA scienceNOW. Our goal in hosting this networking event is to bring together local women's groups to support joint efforts in community outreach and to support communication of science information and ideas to the general public.
