The WiSE OWL Awards honor current female graduate students, post-docs and laboratory technicians who have contributed not only to the scientific community through research excellence, but also to the Duke and the Durham communities through exemplary leadership and mentoring. This year's awards and ceremony are sponsored by The Office of Graduate Student Affairs, the Pratt School of Engineering, the Office of Postdoctoral Services, and Duke University Stores.

Fill out a short nomination form. This can be completed online via our web survey tool or by emailing the completed form to Heidi Koschwanez. Due date: Friday, March 21, 5pm.

A panel composed of graduate students, administrators, post-docs, and faculty members will select the award winners.

Awards ceremony

All nominees and nominators will be notified and invited to an open to the public congratulatory reception during Graduate Student Appreciation Week on April 3rd at 4pm in the FCIEMAS Atrium. Winners will be awarded a gift of recognition and appreciation. This year's awards and ceremony are sponsored by The Office of Graduate Student Affairs, the Pratt School of Engineering, and the Office of Postdoctoral Services.

2007 OWL Award Winners

Audrey Chang is a graduate student in Dr. Mohamed Noor’s lab in the biology department, concentrating on speciation and evolutionary genetics. Audrey has received numerous accolades for her extremely strong work ethic and her willingness to always offer assistance to her colleagues. She has been solicited by multiple leading scientific journals to review papers under consideration. Audrey is an exceptional TA, always enthusiastic and excited about science. Her dedication to her students is commendable, as she always takes the time to get to know her students in order for her to find the most effective way to teach.

Molly Miller is a graduate student in Dr. Anne Lazarides’ lab in the mechanical engineering and materials science department. Her research is in nanoparticle plasmonics, an interdisciplinary field at the interface of photonics and self-assembling materials. Molly was recognized for her important contributions as a departmental recruiting facilitator, as an extremely effective mentor to more junior students exemplified by her work with an undergraduate student in the REU program, and for her numerous on-campus leadership roles including GPSC and the MEMS Graduate Student Advisory Committee.

Dawn Pedrotty is a graduate student in Dr. Nenad Bursac’s lab in the biomedical engineering department. Her research focuses on the in vitro study of the structural and functional connections made between cardiac cells and other cell types which are injected into the damaged heart tissue after a heart attack. Dawn is an outstanding leader and role-model within the community, involved with countless organizations, including fostering homeless and sick kitten for the animal shelter, teaching diabetes education classes in Spanish at a local free medical clinic, a Disaster Action Team captain for the Red Cross, and a mentor with Duke’s BOOST program.
