WiSE Programs

People of all genders are welcome to come, but we ask that all participants be mindful of creating a supportive environment for women.
We have free lunches or dinners at most of our events!

Lunch Discussion Series

WiSE sponsors a series of lunchtime discussions during the fall and spring semesters. Topics have ranged from meetings with Deans, job skill development, to career and family balance. These events are open to all who are interested and come with free lunch! The upcoming discussions are listed under the events section.

Distinguished Speaker Series

WiSE annually invites an expert at the leading edge of science or engineering to speak about issues concerning women in these fields. Due to the prestige of the speakers, these events are widely publicized on campus and usually are co-sponsored with other organizations. We haven't yet selected a speaker for 2007-2008. Have a suggestion? Please let us know.

WiSE OWL Awards

The WiSE Outstanding Woman Leader Awards honour current female graduate students, post-docs and laboratory technicians who have contributed not only to the scientific community through research excellence, but also to the Duke and the Durham communities through exemplary leadership and mentoring.

WiSE mentoring program

In the past, WiSE sponsored a mentoring program where women undergraduate students and junior graduate students were paired with senior graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and professionals for one-on-one mentoring relationships. Unfortunately, the program is now on hiatus partly due to lack of a program coordinator. Are you interested in leading this program? Great! Let us know

WiSE Reading Group

The focus of the reading group is to study and discuss issues which concern women in science and engineering. The group meets twice a month during the academic school year. Past discussion topics have included: mentoring, effective communication with peers, biographies of women in science, and balancing responsibilities of career in science and a family. We don't have anyone yet to organize next year's reading group. Have a book you want to discuss? A hot topic to learn about? Please suggest it, and volunteer to organize the group. WiSE is willing to purchase copies of the book for partcipants.
