Career related events planning

Tong attended a meeting with Virginia Steinmetz, Molly Starback, Tomalei Vess, and representatives from GPSC and DUPA. The purpose of the meeting was to avoid a proliferation of career-related programs this spring and we hope to reach a consensus on our common objectives, audiences, format, timing, and the topics to be covered.

Career center has a career week in late January and the annual symposium for S&E Ph.D. students in April. WiSE has already planned a panel scheduled on March 23, 2007 on alternative careers in S&E. The three offices agreed to work together to put on a series of career seminars in the spring, probably monthly.

The following career alternatives were suggested:
  • patent law
  • scientific writing and journalism
  • secondary education, or teaching at a non-research university
  • science/technology policy (domestic and international?)
  • education policy
  • science/math secondary(?) or higher education
  • NGO work
  • clinical research

Supporting organizations:

  • Office of Postdoctoral Services - Molly Starback
  • Graduate Student Affairs - Tomalei Vess
  • Career Center Graduate Student Services - Virginia Steinmetz
  • DUPA Professional Development Committee - Sheila Plant
  • GPSC - Pae Wu, Audreay Ellerbee
  • WiSE - Tong Ren
