Academic Advising | ||
| The Dean of Trinity College of Arts and Sciences
has established formal academic advising periods that extend over several
calendar weeks prior to preregistration in the fall and spring during which
students meet with their assigned advisors. The purpose of these advising
sessions is to engage in a dialogue about the student's long-range goals
at Duke and an assessment as to how the coming semester's courses will contribute
toward those goals. The advisor's signature on the student's check sheet
and plan of study indicates that the student is prepared to carry out her
or his objectives. Getting an Advisor Women’s Studies majors will be assigned an advisor from the Women’s Studies faculty. Lillian Spiller, the Administrative Coordinator maintains records of advisors and advisees, and will attempt to match students with the faculty member who best represents the student's particular areas of interest. Securing your PIN During each preregistration period, a student whose first major is Women’s Studies must meet with her/his advisor in order to obtain her/his Personal Identification Number (PIN). A student whose second major is Women’s Studies should meet with her/his advisor in Women's Studies to discuss progress towards completion of the major in Women’s Studies but will receive the PIN from the department of her/his first major. Each student needs a PIN in order to register for courses each semester. Each advisor will inform her students regarding scheduling appointments. It is the student's responsibility to secure an appointment before the end of her/his registration window. Being Prepared for Your Advisor A few simple steps will facilitate a useful advising session. Come prepared with the questions you need to have resolved. Bookbag the courses you wish to take on ACES and bring a list of those courses to your meeting.. Fill in the Major Worksheet for the Women’s Studies major with your current and future courses. These are available in the undergraduate English office or can be printed from the Women’s Studies website. If you have any questions, please contact Lillian Spiller at 684-3770 or llps@duke.edu. |
