DUNES
Materials
required: disposable plates, some fine-grained sand, straws, and something
to represent humans (a spork has indeed been used in the past).
Preparation
time is about 5 minutes.
This
activity is appropriate for all ages.
At
least 10-15 minutes is need for this activity.
To start out, talk about what dunes are, where they are found, and why
they are important. Then ask how they are formed and brainstorm on this.
For the activity, sprinkle a thin layer of fine sand on a plate for each
kid. Pass these out along with a straw, and tell them to GENTLY blow across
the sand through their straw. This will create mini-dunes! As the dunes
pile up, tell them to change the direction of their "wind" to see what
happens to the dunes.
