Nu Omicron History

In the spring of 1981, two trailblazing women from Duke University- Evelyn Polk and Caprice Washington- pledged Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. via the Omega Iota Chapter at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

However, the Nu Omicron Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was chartered September 22, 1993, by five determined women- Latarsha Russell, Aileen Hymiah, Greta Cokley, Lonia (Faith) Abbott, and Tomeka Hill. Although there was no Zeta Phi Beta presence on the Duke University campus between 1995 and 1999, on April 9, 2000, the Nu Omicron Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was rechartered and the Zeta light returned to the campus of Duke University. The seven women who dared to reestablish the Zeta presence on campus committed themselves to upholding the ideals of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and to making an impact on Duke's campus and the Durham, NC community.

Since its inception, the Nu Omicron Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has sponsored political, social, and community service events including Zeta Talk Back for promoting political discussion amongst the Duke community; charity car washes and the Annual Royal Palace Charity Ball for the March of Dimes; and, of course, representing each time they step (2003 and 2005 Homecoming Stepshow Champions)!
