Smash for the Cure

Beginning in 1992, Zeta Tau Alpha's national philanthropy was the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. However, this focus later broadened into Breast Cancer Education and Awareness. This new focus includes not only the Komen Foundation, but also other educational means dedicated to fighting breast cancer, education and awareness of breast cancer, and promoting breast health. Each collegiate chapter generally volunteers with one or more local philanthropy as well. In October 2006, Phi Chapter held the first annual Smash for the Cure, in which participants purchased tickets to "smash breast cancer." THINK-PINK t-shirts were also sold to raise money for the cause. Phi Chapter raised approximately $5200 with this single event. As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Zetas nationwide distribute pink ribbons, shower cards, and BSE reminder stickers.

Quick Facts

Since 1992, 9.75 million shower cards with instructions on performing proper breast self-examinations have been distributed.
BSE reminder stickers were added to these efforts in 2000, with more than 6 million distributed since then.
THINK-PINK ribbons were added to our promotions in 1997, and 3.5 million have been distributed since. These ribbons are attached to information cards stressing the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

In addition to these efforts, the chapter also collects pink Yoplait yogurt lids to raise money and promote awareness. For each pink lid collected, Yoplait will donate 10 cents to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and an additional 5 cents to the ZTA Foundation. Drop yours off in the Bryan Center drop box (located on the upper level) and help Save Lids to Save Lives.
