Try the online
web page tutorial first, or read on for more detailed information!
Web page service of URLs of the following form: http://www.duke.edu/~userid[/...] is available for those with userids on the public Unix cluster ("acpub") system who create a world-readable "public_html" subdirectory off of their home directory. The default page is called "index.html", so that "http://www.duke.edu/~userid/" automatically accesses the file ~userid/public_html/index.html on the acpub system. If there is no "index.html" file, an index of the public_html directory will be created.
Note that in order for the files in your "public_html" subdirectory to
be web-accessible, the access control list on that directory must allow
"read" or "rl" access for "system:anyuser". You can ensure this with the
command DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN A "public_html" SUBDIRECTORY ON THE ACPUB SYSTEM UNLESS YOU WANT THE ENTIRE WORLD TO READ IT. All of this can be done simply and automatically with the homepage command, if you wish. There are online pointers to information about HTML, the language of World Wide Web documents, as well as descriptions of how to go about using a clickable image map or an email form. There are also some online graphics to help you get started. Note that users' CGI executables cannot presently be honored on this server for performance and security reasons. Please read the Acceptable Use Policy before making pages available on your acpub account. If you are bewildered about how to set up your own web pages, a good place to get started is the step-by-step online tutorial. You may also want to take a look at the templates available. These are example web pages that you can copy and modify to get started, or just take a look at for ideas. Advanced users seeking information about MIME types served out by www.duke.edu should read the additional document on File Suffixes and MIME Types.
