The Office of Study Abroad is the initial point of contact for all students wishing to take courses abroad, either through a "Duke in" Program or at any other institution not in the United States. In all cases, a student wishing to undertake study abroad should contact the Office of Study Abroad. If you need some quick information, check out the Study Abroad Q&A attached.

The Office of Study Abroad maintains a database of previously approved courses and their transfer equivalents at Duke. If your course has been previously approved, the Office of Study Abroad will be able to process the transfer credit.

If your course has not been previously approved, you must obtain approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Students should initiate the process with the Office of Study Abroad by completing an "Approval of Study Abroad Transfer Credit Courses" form. In addition to the form, students will need to provide a description of the course(s) in question, such as a description from a course catalog, web print-out or course syllabus. Students also need to provide information on where the course(s) fits into the program of study at the institution in question (i.e. is it a course for majors?; is it an intro, intermediate or advanced course?; etc.). A good way to do this is to provide course descriptions for any pre-requisites to the course you are seeking to transfer.

Students may submit these materials with the approval form directly to the Administrative Coordinator in Women's Studies who will forward them to the Director of Undergraduate Studies for approval and then to the Office of Study Abroad for final processing.

At most two (2) course credits from all study abroad courses and/or courses taken at other domestic institutions may be counted toward the Women's Studies major or minor requirements.

If you are looking for a Study Abroad program with specific opportunities in Women's Studies we suggest that you check out approved programs in Denmark, Britain, Australia, NYU Prague, and in Sweden. There is also a program in Cuernavaca , Mexico for Women's Studies and Gender Studies students through the Center for Global Education at Augsburg College.

When you return from your semester abroad, consider taking WST 180 Gender and Cross-Cultural Experience (usually offered in the Spring). This course is specifically aimed at helping you develop and ask questions about your experiences through a feminist lens. In addition, you will work to identify the distinctive features of your experience within its geographical, historical, and organizational context and investigate what feminist theory has said on these topics and see whether it concurs with your experience.

Students are also encouraged to investigate study abroad summer research fellowships, particularly for students planning a senior distinction project.
