Former VP Gore on how to debate President Bush
If anyone should know how to debate President Bush well in a Presidential debate, it should be former Vice President and Presidential Candidate Al Gore, the only one who has done it before. It is easy to say that he doesn't know how, since his debating skills did not bring him a victory; however, experience is always an advantage, even if the experience is unsuccessful. Therefore, Senator John Kerry should make sure to take some advice from Gore in the upcoming debates. (Advice outlined here: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/29/opinion/29gore.html?hp) The first point Gore makes is one of the most important: Bush is a skilled debater. Yes, he appears stupid and incompetent at times, however he is not a poor debater and he will demonstrate his skill well during these important debates. Also, Gore brings up exactly what Kerry should, an attack of Bush's former promises. Bush can ignore them and say hes doing everything right (aka he could like to the country on national television- not that it would be the first time), but if Kerry refutes the ignorance and stubborness, then he can show that Bush did not live up to promises of former debates and make him look fradulent. Hopefully Kerry will take at least some of Gore's advice, and hopefully Kerry can use these debates to show his skill and make himself look more personable and less aloof.
