Craig Burnside, Bio

Craig Burnside joined the Duke faculty in 2004. He previously taught at the University of Virginia (2002-04), the University of Pittsburgh (1992-95) and Queen's University (1990-92). He was a Lead Economist at the World Bank (1995-2002).

Professor Burnside's research concerns US business cycles, currency markets, government finance, and the effects of foreign aid. He has received fellowships and grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the National Science Foundation, and held a National Fellowship at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford in 1998/99.

Professor Burnside is currently a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, serves as Co-Editor of the Canadian Journal of Economics, and as Associate Editor of the Journal of Money Credit and Banking. He was previously an Associate Editor of the American Economic Review.

Professor Burnside has held visiting teaching appointments at Johns Hopkins University, the University of California San Diego, Universidad Torcuato Di Tella and Universidad del CEMA. He has served as a consultant to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, and the Bank of Portugal. He received his PhD from the Northwestern University in 1991.
