In order to thoroughly understand the controversy more clearly, one should look at Lebron James. This 22 year old athlete who plays professional basketball for the Cleveland Cavalier’s was an amazing high school player in his native Ohio. Since he possessed such star power, he made the jump to the NBA, bypassing a crucial basketball development tool in the discipline and organization of college basketball, and to some, more importantly a college education. Over the years, many athletes high school start athletes have followed the footsteps of Lebron James in bypassing a collegiate education. The school of thought wh ois against intercollegiate athletics, disagrees witht his decision, because they believe college provides a pivotal time in which college coaches can nurture athletes and prepare them for the real world ahead. These individuals believe that college sports also provide an avenue for the highly developed athletes to gain an education to fall back on if their professional sports careers do not succeed. In fact, in most cases, the average NBA career is about three years, and these individuals believe that a career or injury to an athlete without a college education could ruin his chances of succeeding in life.
