Summary
Yes, some college students drink excessively and act like complete jackasses when they do. Media reports suggest that these students represent the norm. The data tell a different story. A small proportion of students drink excessively, damage property, commit physical and sexual assault, and degrade the quality of the educational experience for themselves and those around them. Most students either drink responsibly or not at all.
The list of potential negative consequences of excessive drinking is long, and includes amnesia, injury, poor decision-making and the consequences that follow (e.g. unprotected intercourse), and death. While there is no true epidemic of alcohol misuse on US college campuses, far too many students continue to suffer from the negative consequences of their alcohol use or the alcohol use of other students. Fortunately, great strides have been made toward developing programs that are effective at reducing the risks of alcohol misuse among students. |
