Autobiographical summary
I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Medical Psychology, at Duke University Medical Center. I joined the faculty in 2001 after completing two years of post-doctoral training in the Department under H. Scott Swartzwelder. My research interests cover a wide variety of topics, including issues surrounding adolescent brain and psychological development, underage drinking, and links between immune system health and psychological well-being. In 2001, I had the pleasure of helping to create a successful and effective online alcohol education course for college students, entitled AlcoholEdu, which has been completed by more than 1,000,000 students since its inception. I have appeared in several educational videos about adolescent brain development and substance abuse, and worked with Mother's Against Drunk Driving to create education and prevention programs for both elementary school children and high school students. In recent years, I have had the opportunity to speak around the country and internationally about the importance of promoting healthy adolescent brain development by structuring environnents that shape and mold the developing teen brain in positive ways. When it comes to healthy development, an ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure.
