This, quintessentially, is an Indian woman pose. In my mother's memory today, we have an award,Shanti Priyadarshee
Rachna Puraskar, for
exemplary work in literature and
journalism. The award is
distributed bi-annually at district level ceremony, and the nomination is open for anybody related to Nalanda by birth or by work.
She served as a headmistress (hence as a
manager, an accountant and so on) in a
government junior school. Beside being a very
resourceful teacher, she
was a workaholic by nature, so it suited her fine. She had entrepreneurial temperament and an astute awareness about the
surroundings. She had no dearth of
projects, be it in the school, at home, garden or about a good buy and sell in the
local market. From idol sculpturing for the Saraswati Puja at
school to illustrating some graceful dance poses to kids, from leading
us how to improvise on an unintended blob of paint to making of crafts --
She was very
hands on while teaching. It was a bit ironic that her
post-graduation book had to do a lot with names like Aflatoon (Plato), Arastu (Aristotle), Sukrat (Socrates),
Sikandar (Alexander) etc. ; they were all so Greek to me.
For the near ones, she was the doctor
in house. Her naturopathic treatments although, was
hard to appreciate at times. Particularly when it includes you
being
the subject wrapped in mud under Indian sun :).
On other times it was inspiring too; one of my cousin once needed
an emergency treatment in a remote place, and she found an herbal plant
that actually was effective for that instance. I used to be
her compounder for homeopathic (wonder.. why I like the spirit of vodka :)
and biochemic medicines and had picked a lot from those bulky
materia-madicas through osmosis. I wish, I could have as well picked on her
culinary experties to make almost any leaf, root, shoot..
exquisitely delicious.
