This
sketch goes a long time back. It was my first attempt to
portraits, where I used an old photograph of his, I like it.
Time has aged my father now; although at
heart, he is still the same poet he was before. A great poet in
that. To (translate and) quote Rastrakavi (the nation
poet) Dinkar, on his first book Priyadarshini:
"Once in a long time, some poet come across, for whom the
heart openly wants to heap praises; This young ...". Bacchan,
Pant ..
many others had good words for him.
He is active in his
literature work in Magadhi, our local language, and Hindi/Urdu presently.
If you are looking for a postgraduation in Magadhi, you have to read a text-book authored by him. He
has been awarded with honorary doctrate, twice. My father chose to
serve as a high school teacher and was recognized with the nation's
highest honor for teachers, the
presidential award. Prior to this, he had also secured the state
equivalent of this honor.
His cerriculam vita includes many things; being film magazines editor in Calcutta (has interviewed
Satyajeet Ray) to a lyricist in Bombay. He still writes scripts and lyrics for audio-cassettes, local TV serials and Bollywood projects.
His songs
have been sung by the likes of Rafi, Asha, Mukesh, Mubarak, Udit,
Rathore, etc. The sketch above is in fact an audio
cassette cover. I wanted to gift him a
cassette full of asorted songs with his lyrics.
