Duke and the High School Tourney

Basic results from the 1998-99 Duke HS Championship

The nitty-gritty is that this tournament was attended by 17 top teams from Maryland, DC, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. After a three-tier round robin enabled us to seed the teams, the following eight teams advanced to the playoff bracket.

Montgomery Blair, MD, A

Georgetown Day, DC, A

Douglas Freeman, VA, C

Douglas Freeman, VA, A

Gonzaga, DC

Douglas Freeman, VA, B

Georgetown Day, DC, B

Hartselle, AL, A

In an ironic twist, Hartselle B’s dramatic upset of Decatur, GA, enabled Hartselle A to take the eighth and final playoff spot.

More on the final: The two teams in the finals had come all the way from DC to settle it in Durham. In an exciting final up for grabs until Tossup 23 of 25, Montgomery Blair defeated Georgetown Day 305-220 to take the 1998-99 Duke HS Championship. Congratulations to them and to Georgetown Day for exciting runs to the finals (both were 7-0 entering the match). Congrats also to Douglas Freeman, whose four teams went a combined 15-10, including three of eight playoffs teams. Y’all come back now, y’hear?

Don’t worry, we’ll figure out the exact date of the 1999-2000 championship soon enough. Look here for news on it. Also, check this page for online directions when they get posted.
