Duke University Academic Festival has block rooms with the Brookwood Inn, Durham (919-286-3111). The hotel is located a block away from West Campus, Duke University and has free parking and shuttle service to the medical complex. The rooms are guaranteed to have two double beds and comes with USA Today. There is also a moderately-priced restaurant within the hotel. You will have to mention the fact you are with the Duke University Academic Festival when you call and the group rate for the hotel is $59.00 per night. In addition, you will need to reserve the room by January 1st, 2000 to receive the discounted rate.
Alternatively, you might choose to stay at the University Inn, Durham (1-800-801-3441). This hotel is also located a block away from West Campus, Duke University and has free parking. They DO NOT guarantee two beds in the room (rooms may have one king-sized bed) and there is NO restaurant within the hotel. However, they do have a free continental breakfast. Continue on Research Dr. until it ends (it will form a T-stop intersection with Science Drive). On your left, up a hill is an entrance into a parking lot - park here. If you hit a speed-bump, you went too far. Walk on the sidewalks/paths leading out of the parking lot into the Main Quad. Look for the Social Sciences building (imbetween Allen building and Sociology/Psychology building).
Nearby Restaurants:
Please inquire about nearby restaurants at the hotel at which you are staying. For lunch on Saturday, only three places will be open on campus. There will be an Alpine Bagels open in the Great Hall - they serve all types of bagel sandwiches and salads for lunch. In addition, there will be a McDonalds and Armadillo Grill (Tex-Mex food) open in the Bryan Center. If you wish to leave campus for lunch (not recommended since you might not get back in time), there is a bunch of restaurants on 9th street. To get there, head to the traffic circle on West campus. From there, get onto Campus Drive. From Campus Drive, make a left onto Swift Ave (your fourth left from the traffic circle). From Swift Ave, make a left onto Main Street (your second major left). From Main Street, make a right onto 9th Street (your first or second right). Restaurants should begin to appear within a block or two.
Registration:
Registration will be in Room 139 Social Sciences Building from 8:00 am to 9:00 am. Once you register, you will be able to pick up a packet of old Duke University Academic Festival questions and questions written for, but not used in this year's tournament.
Rules Meeting:
The rules meeting will be held in Room 139 Social Sciences Building from 9:00 am to 9:20 am. In the rules meeting, we will clarify the rules and answer any questions regarding the rules.
Arriving Promptly:
Since the buildings at Duke are Duke Card accessed (i.e., the doors can only be opened by student/faculty swipe cards), it is very important that you arrive on time for registration and the beginning of matches after lunch on time (we will have moderators standing outside the doors until the rules meeting begins in the morning and until the start of the first match after lunch - in the times in-between, if you need to switch buildings, moderators will accompany you).
Match Format:
Round 1 - 5 toss-up questions (ten points each)
Round 2 - 10 toss-up questions (ten points each) with bonuses (worth up to a total of 20 points)
Round 3 - 60 second "lightning" round for each team with ten questions (ten points each with a twenty point bonus for all correct)
Round 4 - 10 toss-ups (20 points each).
Sudden Death (in case of tie) - toss-ups will be read until one team answers the toss-up correctly
Rules:
Toss-ups: On a buzz, the person who buzzed will have two seconds to begin their answer after they have been implicitly recognized (moderator looks or points at the person who buzzed or recognizes them verbally). The first answer directed towards the moderator will be taken to be the response. The person who buzzed can give two pieces of related information. There is no penalty for ringing in early and answering the question incorrectly. No verbal communication between team members on toss-ups. We will, however, allow team members to gesture to their teammates that they know the answer as long as they don't use these gestures to communicate what they will respond. After the question has been completely read, teams will have five seconds to buzz in.
Bonuses: After the bonus question has been read, teams will have five seconds to respond unless otherwise specified (for math questions, teams will have ten seconds to respond, unless otherwise specified). The first answer directed towards the moderator by the captain will be taken to be the response. No bounce-back or stealing of bonuses.
Lightning Round: There will be three lightning round categories. The lightning round will begin with the moderator telling the teams the title of the lightning rounds. The titles will be mostly straight-forward and at least two of the three lightning round categories will be academic in nature. The team with the lower score at the beginning of the lightning round will select the category of their choice (in the case of a tied score, a fair coin will be flipped to determine which team will go first) - we will call this team Team 1 and the opposing team Team 2. Team 1 will have 60 seconds to answer the ten questions. Teams can pass on a question if they choose and the moderator will go back to passed questions as time allows. Once Team 1 is done, Team 2 will have 30 seconds to answer all the missed/passed/unread questions. Because the opposing team has the opportunity to answer unread and passed questions, it is advantageous for the first team to try to attempt all ten questions. Once this is completed, Team 2 selects their lighting round category and so forth.
Substitutions: Substitutions are allowed between matches, but not between rounds of a match.
Penalties: Moderators have the power to issue warnings and game misconduct penalties to individuals and teams at the tournament for inappropriate behavior. Inappropriate behavior includes, but is not limited to distracting the other team on their bonuses, inappropriate comments. Normally, the sequence of penalties will be first a formal warning, second a 25 point deduction, and third disqualification. Moderators have the power to alternate this sequence as they see fit.
Challenges/Protests: A team has the right to challenge/protest the accurateness of the question itself, the moderator's reading of the question, the answer(s) of the question and the answer(s) given by the ringing team. To challenge a question, any team member should shout "challenge/protest" at the conclusion of the question challenged or at the conclusion of the following question. Do NOT interrupt a question to challenge it. Challenges/protests will be considered only if it has a bearing on the outcome of the match. They will be handled by the head moderator of the division and his/her decision is absolutely final.
Playoffs: The top eight teams in the tournament will make the playoffs. The playoffs will be single-elimination with seeding done only once before the playoffs begin (e.g. if the eighth seed beats the first seed, they will play the winner of the fourth/fifth seed match, not the highest remaining seed after the first round). Teams that do not qualify for the playoffs will be invited to play in "bowl games", which are to take place during the playoffs, with playoff questions, in different rooms. We ask that all teams stay for their "bowl games".
