TCP/IP Setup for Duke

using Microsoft Windows 95

There's a fair amount to set up here, but it is a lot easier than it may seem at first glance. I've tried to take you through it step-by-step, with actual screen shots whenever I felt they were necessary. If you find anything here inaccurate, or confusing, or misleading, please e-mail me.

Make sure that before you do this step, you've already installed Dial-Up Networking.

Setting Up the Network Configurations

Enter Control Panel, and double-click on the Network icon. A panel will be displayed showing what configurations are installed already. You want it to look like the one below. (you should remove any items other than those that are listed in the graphic).

If any are missing, click the Add button, and follow the directions below for each missing item:

Client for Microsoft Networks Properties

Highlight 'Client for Microsoft Networks' in the first window area on the panel, and click the Properties button. Set the Properties to look like this:

Click OK.

Dial-Up Adapter Properties

Highlight Dial-Up Adapter and click the Properties button. Select Enhanced Mode under the Driver Type tab. Select the Bindings tab and make sure TCP/IP is the only item with a checkmark, and under the Advanced tab, don't touch anything. Click OK.

TCP/IP Properties

Now highlight TCP/IP, and click the Properties button. You'll be presented with a panel with six tabs. Select the IP Address tab (should have come up automatically on this tab) and select 'Obtain IP address Automatically', as below:

Click the Bindings tab, and make sure Client for Microsoft Networks is checked.
Click the WINS Configuration tab, and make sure "Disable WINS Resolution" is selected.
Click the Advanced tab, and make sure it reads 'None' in the window.

Leave both the Gateway and DNS Configuration tabs at the default, which is blank information. (The DNS information is entered in your Dial-Up Networking connection, and the Gateway information is not needed).

Now select OK at the bottom of the panel to return to the "Network" panel.
Click on the "Identification" tab and give your computer a name, if it doesn't already have one specified. This is only used for some advanced features, and can be changed later.

Ignore the "Access" tab for now.

Click OK to complete the configuration changes. Windows 95 will now prompt you to reboot. You don't need to reboot right now, but you will need to before you try to connect with these changes.

You are now ready to Create Your Connection.
