Shaw Philonotis is a genus from the moss family of
Bartramiaceae. Species of Philonotis grow in wet places all over the world.
Its name comes from Greek, where 'filos' means 'to love' and 'notis' refers to
'moistness'. Most species show extreme amount of variation and that is what makes
them difficult but also very interesting to study. This site
summarizes the current information about the species occuring in Europe, North
America, and in future also in other continents. This site is still under construction. It is based mainly on
my dissertation thesis defended at Charles University, Prague, in 2004. <----
