Wojo on Duke-Kentucky
"Is Christian Laettner going to play for us? Is Jamal Mashburn going to
play for them? Everybody remembers the game, it was a great game with big
play after big
play. But how does
it affect this game? Not much. We're two great teams in our own right,
and this will be
a great game for college basketball."

Duke beats Syracuse 80-67
Wojo was plagued with foul trouble and hence only played 26
minutes. He was 1-of-4 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line.
He had 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, and 3 personal fouls.
No one but the freshmen shot better than 50%, but they combined for
20-of-27 field goals(.741) scoring 45 of our 80 points and pulled down 25
of
Duke's 44 rebounds. Wojo tallied his 500th career assist
tonight, someting that only 5 other players have done in their
time
at Duke. He is currently in 6th place on the career assist
chart behind
Danny Ferry with 506.

Devils advance to sweet 16 for first time since
1994
Duke beat Oklahoma State University 79-73 in the second round of
the NCAA
Tournament. Wojo played 31 minutes scoring 5 points on 1-of-5
shooting
from beyond the arc and 2-of-2 from the line. He had 1 rebound,
3
assists and 2 steals without a turnover and committing just 1
foul.
His 2 steals today bring him to a career total of 200. Only 5
players in
Duke history have recorded more than 200 career steals.

Duke tallies 30th win of season by beating Radford
99-63
Wojo looked much healthier as the Devils cruised over Radford in
Rupp
Arena. Wojo played 19 minutes, was 1-of-1 from 3-point range,
grabbed 2
rebounds, recorded 6 assists and 3 steals with 2 turnovers, and
had 1
personal foul.
Tonight Wojo moved up in the record books for his season
steal total.
He passed Bobby Hurley (his best season for steals) in the
Radford game to
move into 8th
place. Wojo currently holds the 2nd place record for most
steals in a
season with 82 last year.
''He looked great. He was diving for balls. He was
pressuring the ball. He was the
same old
Wojo today. I think he's over his sickness.''
Teammate Elton Brand on Wojo
''I tried to get a feel for using him again. I
think his stamina is getting better. The one word I've
never had to use with Steve is endurance. That's what I'm
watching now
with Steve. He's getting back."

Duke wins
over Clemson in thriller
Wojo played 29 minutes and although his shooting percentages
weren't
good, all his 7 points (a drive to the basket drawing the foul
and
converting the free throw, another free throw after a steal,
both with
less than 8 minutes remaining, and a 3 pointer with only a
minute to go)
were
key in Duke's victory today in Greensboro. He grabbed 3
rebounds, dished out 4 assists, had 1 steal, 4 fouls, and no
turnovers for the second straight game. Duke won on Avery's
tip-in of
his own shot 66-64.

Wojo denies Heels; Devils win 77-75
Firstly, I have to say that I've never been to a more intense
basketball game in my life. Wojo told the campers in
Krzyzewskiville Friday evening
that Saturday would be his last game in Cameron and that they
would not
lose. He was true to his word and when Duke was down by 17 with
11 and a
half minutes left in the game, North Carolina only scored two
more field
goals and our team came back to beat them by two.
Wojo only had one point but his team-high 33 minutes were
essential to
this ball game. Wojo was 0-of-4 from the field, 1-of-2 from the
line,
grabbed only 1 rebound, had 2 fouls, but stole the ball 3 times
and dished
out a game-high and
career-high 11 assists with only 1 turnover.
Ed Cota was
1-of-5 from the field and had a game-high 5 turnovers.
Coach K said it best after the game when he said that Wojo
had not a
good, but a remarkable game and that Wojo would not let this
team lose
today in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Last night, Coach said, "I
truly love
Wojo," and encouraged all of us at the pep rally to do whatever
we do
with all our heart, like Wojo plays basketball.
Game notes: Duke has now finished with a 15-1 record in the
ACC; no
ACC team in history
has ever won 15 league games. Mike Krzyzewski won his 500th
victory
as a coach today. Duke will play at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday
against Virginia in the second game of the ACC tournament in
Greensboro after clinching the number 1 seed for the tournament
today.
Game Quotes:
"All I know is that we seemed to turn up the intensity, and
the
momentum changed the rest of the way."
Wojo
"I'll take my point guard with me through any alley or dark
street.
With everything on the table, he had 11 assists and inspired our
team to
play the kind of man-to-man defense it is capable of playing.
His
performance had to be one of the great one-point efforts in the
history
of hte game. He wouldn't let us lose his last game here."

Seniors honored at Cameron
The four seniors (Todd Singleton, Ricky Price, Roshown McLeod,
and Steve
Wojciechowski) were honored today. In Wojo's
speech following the game,
he told us that Cameron has been his home for the last four
years. He
said that there were no words to describe what he was feeling.
"If there
were, I would use them," he said.
Duke clinches share of ACC

Duke ends losing streak in Littlejohn
Wojo played a team-high 34 minutes scoring 8 points on 3-of-6 shooting
(2-of-5 from three-point range). His layup was only his second shot made
inside the arc in an ACC contest this season. He had 1 steal, 2
rebounds, 2
assists, 3 turnovers, and 4 fouls. He not only played good defense on
Terrell McIntyre, holding him to 4-of-12 shooting, but tonight Wojo moved
into 5th place in
career three-point field goals made with 129, passing Phil Henderson as
Duke beat Clemson 70-66.

Devils top Demon Deacons 78-47
Wojo played 26 minutes and dished out a game-high 5 assists against Wake
Forest on Valentine's Day. He scored 3 points on 1-of-2 shooting from
beyond the arc and grabbed a career high 6 rebounds, second in the game
only to teammate Shane Battier who had 12. Wojo had 2 turnovers and 2
personal fouls. Wojo is still leading the team in minutes this season,
reaching the 700 minute mark on the season tonight, and is also leading
the team in assists, steals, and assist-turnover ratio.
Devils down Seminoles by 16 points
Wojo played 28 minutes and scored 4 points all from free throws as he
grabbed 2 rebounds (pulling down his 50th rebound of the season), dished
out 3 assists with 1 turnover, had 1 steal,
and forced several turnovers, including a 5 second call near the end of
the first half. Duke won 86-72, upholding the flawless record versus
Florida State in Cameron.
Duke beats NC State 65-49
Wojo scored 6 points on perfect free throw shooting, and had 5 assists, 1
turnover, 2 rebounds, and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He shut down freshman
point guard Miller, who had no points and 3 turnovers.
"It's one of the tougher places to play in the ACC. They don't really
like me. I
think I hear the brunt of it, which is
great. They
support their team. For us to come in here
and win says a lot for us. It's not just the guys
for N.C. State.
You've got the fans who give them energy and momentum. You've
got to beat those people, too. It's funny
to me. A little guy like me, who not so long ago nobody
cared about, now everyone has an opinion about me."
Wojo on the Wolfpack crowd
"I think he's been watching those steel cage matches,
and he was trying to put me in a figure
four. That's just something that happens.
He plays
hard, and I have a lot of respect for him. I
think he's
going to be a great player for State. It
just got physical.
That's the way it goes. We're two hardheaded
kids,
and those things tend to happen."

Devils lose for second time this season

rebounds (making his carrer rebound total 250), 3 assists (recording his
100th assist of

Cota had 12 points and 12 assists as the 63.5% shooting Tar Heels
overcame
Duke to win 97-73.
Wojo vs. Cota
In DeCourcy's pregame analysis, he gives
the edge to Duke at the point guard position. Is he trying to make
up for all the things he's said about him?
Last year when Duke played at Carolina, Wojo scored his career high 18
points on 6-of-7 three point shooting, tying Trajan for a school record
in single game three point percentage. Look at
a picture of Wojo and Shammond Williams taken at last year's game by The Chronicle.
CNNSI has done profiles of the Duke-UNC matchups, including
Wojo and Ed Cota.
"It's another game for us, another league
game, and we take each of them as important. Right
now we're just
having a lot of fun playing. It doesn't matter
whether it's Carolina or
Georgia Tech or N.C. State. We're just looking
forward to playing
each game."
"It's a very special game. It's an intense
rivalry. It's probably the best in sports. We
really look forward to
playing them, and they really look forward
to playing us, and that's
what makes it really special."
Steve
Wojciechowski on Thursday's game

Grant Hill who has 461.

"Spivey was taken out of the game almost completely by Steve
Wojciechowski, Duke's point guard."
Journal Now on Wojo
"We thought they were going to take us for granted

Duke beats NC A&T 101-66
Wojo had a quiet night with 21 minutes, was 3-of-4 from the field (2-of-3
from three point range) for 8 points, had 3 assists, 1 turnover, and 1 foul.
He did move up in the record book though in career three point attempts
and is now tied for 5th with Phil Henderson with 320.
Mike DeCourcy - what does he have against Wojo?
Mike DeCourcy, writer for The
Sporting
News has consistently attacked Wojo all season with comments such as:
Wojo was a McDonald's
All-American only because he signed
with the Blue Devils. I wouldn't go
citing him if you're trying to talk great
talent.
This comment was in the
mailbag which he answers at The Sporting News. He's just a
sportswriter; Wojo will and has been proving him wrong on the court.
Duke holds on to beat Clemson 81-80
Wojo tied for a team high 29 minutes and had 2 steals, 4 assists, had 2
boards, made both his free throws, but was 0-of-5 from the field and had
3 fouls and an uncharacteristic 3 turnovers. One of his turnovers came
with about 10 seconds left directly after he and Roshown caused a jump
ball
with the
possesion arrow pointing to Duke. He didn't catch Shane's inbound pass
and it went out of bounds to Clemson. Wojo forced McIntyre to take a bad
shot which he missed in the closing seconds and Iturbe missed his fade
away
jumper he
took after getting the rebound, and the game was over. Congratulations
Devils on a big win.
"We were very fortunate."
Wojo as quoted in The News & Observer
"They played very hard and very competitive, and they play a physical
brand of basketball, more physical than any team we've
played. Down the stretch, it's a gut
check. You've just got to
suck it up and be ready to go."
Wojo as quoted in
The Chronicle by Zachary Davis
"I thought our defense at the end, in the last two exchanges where we
got the jump ball and where they missed at the end was excellent. It was
one of those great
moments, the reason why we want to be in this conference."
Coach Krzyzewski on the Clemson game and the ACC
From the Associated Press:
McIntyre, who led the Tigers with 17 points, dribbled toward the lane
with 10 seconds left, but was tied up by Steve Wojciechowski with the
possession arrow pointed to Duke. But Wojciechowski turned it back
over one second later when the inbounds pass hit off his leg and out of
bounds.
Clemson set up again on offense, but McIntyre's 12-footer hit
off
the front of the rim with three seconds left and Iker Iturbe's
desperation shot at
the buzzer also found iron.

"I think the maturity was a big factor. They kept their poise and
we didn't.
Our defensive intensity was not there, either.
We were not getting easy baskets from it and
they handled our defense very well [in the second
half].
"We're usually the ones whose offense feeds off their defense, but

See a clip of Wojo's behind the back pass as he scored one of his layups
against Davidson on ESPN.
Wojo scored a team-high 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting, made 3
three-pointers while shooting 50% from beyond the arc, dished out 5
assists,
had 4 turnovers, 3 steals, 2 rebounds, and 2 fouls. He played 29
minutes in the 100-65 win against Davidson.

From
The Chronicle:
"I think we got good drives and we were able to push it up
and get some easy buckets so I think our defense keyed our
offense," senior Steve Wojciechowski said. "When we were
real aggressive defensively we ended up getting good
aggressive baskets on the offensive end. "
From
The News & Observer:
"This might be the last time you see that happen," cracked Wojo,
referring to his scoring leadership.
The Chronicle's 1997-98
Duke Basketball Preview is out
From
"A Crazy's Paradise: Blue Devils primed for return to Final Four":
As the 1996-97 season wore on, Duke wore down. Point
guard Steve Wojciechowski, the team's emotional leader,
was a virtual ironman for the Blue Devils, averaging more
than 31 minutes per game and even more down the stretch.
The wear and tear showed, however, as the ferocious
defensive intensity that had sparked Duke during its
seven-game ACC winning streak faded with each game.
Problem solved:
William Avery provides
relief for
Wojciechowski, last
year's ACC leader in
steals and the
conference's
third-rated assist man.
Avery also provides a
stark contrast to the
more traditional
Wojciechowski, as the
freshman prefers to
drive and dish off.
From
"O Captain, My Captain!":
"It has not been the same [in recent years] as the teams
where we had so much stability from the mid-'80s to '94,
with older guys teaching the younger guys," coach Mike
Krzyzewski said. "We have that now in Wojo especially and
Trajan."
How much has one year changed perceptions of
Wojciechowski? In its 1996-97 college basketball preview
issue, Sports Illustrated questioned whether the point guard
would earn much playing time; this season, having picked
Duke No. 1, SI put him on its cover.
"We've been through everything together," Wojciechowski
said. "We've been through the worst season in recent Duke
history, we've won an ACC championship, we've been
through everything. As we've gone through those things,
we've grown as people, as players, and we've matured."
Duke beats Army 78-45 in season-opener
Wojo played 21 minutes and scored 5 points on 2-2 shooting, got 1
steal, 1 rebound, had 3 assists, but committed three turnovers and
three fouls while helping Duke start the season with a perfect record.
From Blue Devil Weekly:
Wojciechowski, who was out on the court for more than 31 minutes per game
last season but logged just 21 minutes
against Army, now has the luxury of going all-out and knowing he has help
coming off the bench.
"Depth definitely will be important," said Wojo after his five-point,
three-assist effort. "It's not going to take
people playing 35 minutes a game (to win) and that's a help to us."
From
CNNSI:
"We were a little anxious being talented and young and we
used that to play some really good defense," Krzyzewski said.
"Army had only nine points at the half but it wasn't because
they played poorly, it was because we played great defense."
Kwasniak and Tatum were impressed.
"[Wojciechowski] is one of the best," said Kwasniak, who
finished with six assists, 11 turnovers, four new stitches over
his right eye from a scramble and two scraped elbows from a
number of trips to the floor.
From SI's
Scouting Report on Duke:
"If I had Brand's arms, I could pick
something off the floor without bending over," says the 5'10"
Wojciechowski.
The style Krzyzewski has in mind depends a great deal on
Wojciechowski, who has few peers in pressuring the ball or
annoying opposing fans. "I like getting on people's nerves,"
Wojciechowski says. "Some guys can really shoot it. Some guys
are tremendous athletes. I'm a pest. You have to play to your
strength."
From Alexander Wolff at
CNNSI in an interview:
And Wojo -- Wojo is a guy who's played a lot of soccer in his
time and he has the quick feet that really help in that.
He's a
guy that Mike Krzyzewski was going to start come hell or high
water, really, because he reminds him so much of Bobby
Hurley. He's got that spirit, the willingness to step in
and take
the charge. He's just the kind of leader, a very emotional kid
on the floor, that Duke is going to need as it goes to war in
what is probably the toughest conference going this year, the
ACC.
Wojo praised in pre-season report

Preseason Notebook
Devils beat Aussies
Wojo sealed the game with two free throws and contributed 6 points on 1-4
shooting but 4-4 from the line, had 9
assists, 1 steal, and 1 rebound while only committing 1 turnover and
1 foul. He played 28 minutes against Australia and he took a charge in
the
first minute of the second half.
From
The Chronicle:
Point guard Steve Wojciechowski also kept the offense moving, despite
scoring only six points. Wojciechowski racked up nine assists-seven in
the second half-and hounded Australian point guard Brett Maher all
night.
"Wojo did a great job the whole game running the offense, and even more
so than running the offense, he did a great job pressuring the
ball-handler," Langdon said. "They had great ball-handlers on the other
team. Maher is a great player, and I think Wo wore him down a little bit
towards the end of the game."
Another Wojo story
College Sports News Daily put out a
good article about Wojo the other day. Read what he has to say about
his expectations for this season.
Duke beats Upstate All-Stars
Wojo scored eight points on 2-4 three point shooting and made both his
free throws. He had three rebounds, three assists, five steals, one foul,
and no turnovers in just 19 minutes. He took two charges in the first 2:03
of the game and forced the All-Stars into a 5-second violation.
From
The Chronicle:
Freshman point guard William Avery brought another dimension to the
fast break game, hitting six field goals,
four of which came on drives to the basket. Avery and 1997 team MVP Steve
Wojciechowski seemed to
complement each other perfectly at the point. While Wojciechowski was
deadly in recording five steals, Avery
showed his ability to score off the dribble.
"I can learn a lot from [Steve], his leadership, his experience and the
way he can handle situations," Avery said.
"He's more of a steady point guard; I'm more of a scoring threat. I like
to create opportunities."
Wojo selected pre-season All ACC second team
In Operation Basketball, the media declared Wojo
Preseason second team All-ACC on Sunday. Trajan
was named to the pre-season first team and Elton
Brand is the pre-season rookie of the year.
White team wins Scrimmage
Wojo's White team won the Blue & White Scrimmage. Battier scored
the game-high with 16 while Elton contributed 13, both of them grabbing 6
rebounds. Wojo had 6 points while shooting 50% and had 5
assists to help the White team beat the Blue 46-39. He was quoted in an
article in the News &
Observer as saying, "I won't play against a better defender than
[Avery] all year." How much better will that make Wojo?

A cool Wojo story
I just got permission to post an
