Bethany Ever wonder how Wojo's shot improved between his sophomore and junior years?Chip Engelland, the shot doctor, worked with Wojo on his jump shot. Wojo actually was the ACC player to improve his field goal percentage the most between the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons, going from .318 to .443, a 12.5% increase. He in fact holds the record, along with Trajan Langdon and Bobby Hurley, of best single game three-point percentage, when he hit 6-of-7 threes against North Carolina in Duke's final regular season game of the 1996-97 season.Wojo wins awards at Duke Basketball BanquetWojo took home three awards presented at the Duke Basketball Banquet. He was given the Captains Award along with fellow tri-captains Trajan Langdon and Roshown McLeod, the award for having the most assists on the season, and he was named Best Defensive Player, an award determined by the coaching staff, which he shared with Shane Battier.Wojo led Desert Classic in assistsWojo's team, Pacific, won the game for 3rd place Saturday. Wojo averaged 5.7 assists per game in the tournament, placing above the other 38 participants.Wojo invited to another pre-draft campWojo will attend the Desert Classic in Phoenix, another pre-draft camp, based on his performance in Portsmouth. Fellow tri-captain Roshown McLeod, who did not attend the camp in Portsmouth, VA, was invited, but suffered back spasms and came back home. About 40 players ususally attend the Desert Classic. Wojo's team lost in the semi-final Friday.Another award for WojoWojo is the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) National Defensive Player of the Year, an award (also called the Henry Iba Corinthian Award) which Tim Duncan received for the past three seasons, and which Grant Hill won in 1994. Congratulations, Wojo!Managing your timeAnnie Gulley sent me this link to an article on Wojo she wrote for her school newspaper at Cary Academy. ESPN also did a report.Wojo the Final Four analystWojo, along with Chris Fowler, Digger Phelps, and Dick Vitale, gave his analysis of the semifinal games for ESPN at The Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX. For more details, click here.3-point shooting contestWojo is going to participate in the annual 3-point shooting contest which will appear tonight (March 26th) at 9:30 p.m. on ESPN. Wojo barely missed advancing to the second round by one point. He scored 12 points to come in 5th place out of the eight players competing. Curtis Staples went on to score 25 of a possible 30 points in the second round and eventually won the contest.Kentucky ends Duke's season 86-84Wojo played 32 minutes scoring 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc and hitting 1 of his 3 free throw attempts. He tallied 4 assists, grabbed 3 rebounds, had 2 turnovers, 4 fouls, and 3 steals. With his 3 steals, Wojo passed Bobby Hurley in career steals at Duke moving up to 5th place with 203.Wojo finished his career with more steals than turnovers which is quite a remarkable feat. Only four ACC players in the 1996-97 finished their season with more steals than turvovers. His career turnovers are 202. His career assist-turnover ratio of 2.50 is 3rd best in ACC history and the best ever at Duke. His single season assist-turnover ration this year of 2.56-to-1 is the second highest in school history, only to himself last year. He also passed Jim Spanarkel's 1977 season and Quin Snyder's 1989 season record for steals, moving up to 5th place, tied with Christian Laettner's 1992 season steals. Game quotes: "My goal as a Duke basketball player was to return this basketball team
to the status they had prior to coming to Duke. I feel
that along with some of
the other upperclassmen, we have been able to set the table for the
future. We were so close to making it back to the Final Four that it
really hurts, not just for me,
but for my teammates and all the people who have believed in us for so
long."
"You have to do everything right to win big games like this. We
didn't finish. But I think Kentucky won. I don't think we lost."
"I said before the game I thought Wayne Turner
is the most underrated guard in the country."
"I enjoyed it. I hope he enjoyed it. What can I say? It's no big deal."
"I put my faith in the coaches for four years. My career turned
out probably
better than it should have. I
wouldn't second-guess it
at all. Watching from the sidelines I
couldn't say hurt
any worse than being in the ballgame.
I thought
Avery would make the shot."
"I feel pretty empty right now. But this team
accomplished a lot and ought to be proud.
And when they do
win championships, I'll always feel I was
a part."
Wojo played with emotion and intensity every minute he played for Duke. He is truly a special player and forever will be remembered at Duke. Thank you, Wojo, for putting your heart on the floor every day in practice and in every game.
