Little River

Location: North Durham, NC

Class: II-III (IV+)

Length of Trip: 1.5 miles

Gage: USGS Little River Near Orange Factory, NC Minimum suggested level 3 ft.

Description: This is a short, action packed run that will surprise Dukies with its proximity to campus , steep gradient, and technical moves.  The Little is far and away the best whitewater run in the North Carolina Piedmont.  At around 3 feet, it can be a fantastic introduction to creeking  for less-experienced paddlers looking for their first taste of Southeastern creeks.  At five feet and above, the river starts to get pushy and scouting is nearly impossible.  Levels up to and exceeding10 feet are runable, but experience on both class  IV creeks and the Little river specifically are highly advisable.

Directions: Map

To the Take Out: From Highway 501 N, just before crossing Lake Michie, you will see a small frontage road on the left. Take this road and park right by the lake being careful not to block the driveway of the house on the hill.

To the Put In: Head back on 501 S (right turn out of the put in) Make the next right on Preston Andrews road. Follow this road until it "T's" into Johnson's Mill Road. Turn right on Johnson's Mill and follow it untill you come to a bridge, that is the Little river. Unload your boats and gear here, but be careful not to leave tire tracks in the grass around the bridge, landowners have complained. Heed the "No Parking" signs, turn around and head back towards the put in to park along the road where the signs stop.
