Computers and Me

Computer Science Background: My knowledge and familiarity with computers is very limited. I took two semesters of Java during my senior year of highschool, though I did well in the course, I only survived on an assignment by assignment basis, upon completion of a section I would immedietley forget everything I had just learned. Computer Science for me is the most difficult topic imaginable, if possible i feel that it is almost too logical, too stiff, I have always been a rather artsy person, thus the discipline of computer science simply does not sit as well with me as courses such as English and Philosophy. I of course know how to use basic tools such as Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel, but beyond that I couldn't differentiate a bit from a byte.

Computer Science Goals: Computers and I have always had a very tenous relationship, from a young age it seemed as though every piece of electronic equipment I came into contact with would inexplicably explode or more often simply malfunction. It was with great trepidation that I learned how to type on a keyboard, use a word processor and even...connect to the internet. As such I approaced the Java course I took in highschool as another tedious chore, only taking it because I needed a tech credit to graduate. However, in enrolling for CompSci4 here at Duke University I hope to, for lack of a better phrase, come to terms with my long standing fear of programming and computers in general, and in a way grow more comfortable with computer technology, as more than likely I will continue to use and rely on it for the remainder of my natural life, even if it so happens the career I choose has nothing to do with computers directly.

Nicknames: My Chinese name is Fu Chuan, and so in english I spell my first name Chuan, however on assignment tags I have a tendency to spell is Chaun, pronounced Shawn, or Sean.
Hobbies: My hobbies include pingpong, swimming, biking, lifting, taking naps, and eating ramen.
Year: I am a puny freshman, please don't hurt me.
