Computer Autobiography

  • I probably first used a computer when I was four years old, and I was online with some ancient dial-up modem that probably sent data at 4bits/sec which was before the WWW was up. I remember someone telling me I missed Defcon but there second one was coming up, so I've been around for a while.
  • I mostly deal with PCs on a daily basis, but I've had to use Macs in academia and multimedia workstations for various software packages. I had a short-lived affair with Linux back in the day when users had to script their own drivers. Laziness killed the love. After being forced to learn every vi command known to god, my desire to use UNIX machines also wanned considerably. I never got around to BeOS.
  • I work for a computer animation company in Raleigh that mostly works in advertising. I do massive polygonal modelling (gave up on NURBS), some rigging, animation, rendering, etc.
  • The primary reason I'm studying CompSci is to get into computer animation since Duke's visual art resources are...lacking. I was in the Duke In LA study abroad program for film/video/digital and took a class in Computer Animation at USC. I had absolutely no life for three weeks and worked on my project in Maya everyday from 10 in the morning to 10 at night when they kicked me out. I'd go clubbing at 10:30pm till 3am, sleep till 9am and repeat. And I loved it...though I did pick up this weird thing with Diet Pepsi and ITunes.
  • The computer scientist I'd consider becoming would work with some 3D animation company's proprietary software development team writing better algorithms for things like cloth, fur, shading, etc.
  • My WORST programming experience involved a 3000+ line program that didn't have clear instructions.
  • The above was also my least favorite programming experience for the exact same reasons.
  • I hope to continue my career in computer animation and better understand the marriage between art and technology with what I learn in computer science.
  • Hm...i think i covered all the bases. Oh yeah. Links.
