Drummond's Red Maple (Acer rubrum var. drummondii)

Tree of wet habitats, uncommon in Durham Co., more common in the Coastal Plain. Differs from the other varieties of Red Maple (rubrum and trilobum) in having longer samaras (3-5 cm vs. 1.5-3 cm) and leaves that are densely felty-pubescent beneath.

The leaves are white and very fuzzy beneath. This tree was photographed in Scotland Co., NC.

Bark of a medium-sized tree.
