Pondcypress (Taxodium ascendens)

A common deciduous conifer of pond margins and other wet areas of the Coastal Plain. Very similar to Baldcypress (T. distichum), but the branchlets are usually ascending and the leaves are appressed instead of spreading laterally.

Pondcypress (Taxodium ascendens)

Like Baldcypress, the leaves turn pale brown in the fall and the branchlets drop off, leaving the tree "bald". Some individuals are difficult to identify to species -- as a result Pondcypress is sometimes considered a variety of Baldcypress.

Bladen Co., NC 10/7/06.
