Middle
School Simulation A one-week "dry run" gives fifth graders
a taste of middle school before they get there.
The transition from
elementary school to middle school can be both exciting and disconcerting for
students as they adjust to a new schedule, rotating classrooms, and new academic
and social expectations. To help prepare students for this important transition
and boost their confidence, BOOST has designed a weeklong program that gives fifth
graders in Lakewood, E.K. Powe, and Forest View Elementary Schools a chance experience
a bit of the middle school environment before they get there. This program,
which will take place at the end of the school year, will also give fifth grade
teachers an opportunity to "specialize" in a particular subject area.
Teacher training and support will be provided, both specifically for this special
program, and through ongoing BOOST teacher professional development programs.
For simulated science classes, we will provide teaching modules and other support
to help you adjust your existing curriculum to the inquiry-based method. Prior
to the simulation, fifth grade teachers will get to spend a day in middle school
experiencing the sixth grade schedule. Throughout the Middle School Simulation,
BOOST Science Coaches - specially trained Duke medical students, graduate students
in the biomedical sciences, and MD/PhD students - will assist in each classroom. The
Middle School Simulation provides an excellent opportunity for fifth graders to
experience rotating classes and engage in problem-solving and inquiry-based learning
approaches that they will encounter when they enter sixth grade. As a team, fifth
grade teachers, principals, school staff, BOOST staff and coaches will help fifth
graders look toward middle school with confidence and excitement. Back
