The Book of Kells

The Book of Kells dates from the period around 800 AD and
consists of 340 folios (640 pages) of richly illuminated gospels.
Considered to be one of the best examples of hand-wrought
publishing in existence, it is a miracle that it has survived its
various plunderings and transferals of ownership. (For a period
of months it lay hidden, buried in a bog!) Today, it lays
cherished in Trinity College Library, a fitting place for this
antique treasure.
