Sad Death of a Myth

This is the image of Ireland that most tourists, myself included, bring to Ireland packed in their luggage. This does not live up to expectations. Are there thatch-roof cottages in Ireland? Yes, of course. But there seems to be only about 1 in 4,000 homes that have such a thing. It is far more expensive to have this type of roof so the vast majority of houses that we saw had slate or shingle roofs..

But, driving along a country road and suddenly coming across something like this makes it all the more exciting and charming for its rarity.
