CompSCI 6 - SPRING 2009

Name: Derek Hsu

Autobiography: I have loved used computers since I was around 7 years old. To me, computers were a way to do anything I wanted when I wanted, with virtually no restrictions. I have owned a number of computers. The first one I used was a hand-medown Dell. The specs were 800 mhz / 256 ram / 20gb hard drive. That lasted me a while until I took a big jump and got a customized computer which was significantly stronger, and had a graphics card. I've bought another desktop since then and also a laptop. The desktop I built myself and the laptop I bought from Asus. I use computers a lot on a daily basis. I have always been extremely interested in the ineternet and its power to let you communicate with anyone around the world at anytime and let you find out virtually everything. I spend quite a bit of time on the computers, including surfing the web, building simple websites, chatting with people, doing homework, watching movies, and just random stuff. There has been no event that made me want to study CS, but rather in general I have always been interested in computers and how programs written can be so powerful. I'm not too sure what a computer scientist does on a daily basis, but I would imagine lots of coding and lots of coffee-drinking. Those readings are what I have thoguht along. In regards to the first, I do see that computer science is so powreful and is transforming the world, even if we don't see it. In today's world, the computers and the internet and websites are becoming so important that we could not live without them - thus computer science is also absolutely neccesary. Computer science is training for the future. So many jobs in the future too will require knowledge of the computer and CS will absolutely help that out. The combination of business skills, for example, with CS, would be undoutedly a strong tool for the future. And even if you don't program, CS helps you think logically and gives you an extra skill set that can only be valuable. As of now, I don't know what programs I'd be interested in writing; maybe games, if I get a lot better. However, in the future, I hope to write something pragmatic or something that a lot of people will use. I definitely could see myself doing CS in the future or working very closely with computers.
