Dr. Joe McClernon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center. His research interests include the neurobiological basis of drug craving and reward, nicotine dependence among individuals with psychiatric illnesses, and the effects of nicotine on cognition and behavior in humans. He is working with other researchers to develop new smoking cessation treatments using modern learning and pharmacological techniques and principles. Joe is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of North Carolina.
Brett Froeliger, Ph.D.

Dr. Brett Froeliger received his Ph.D. in Brain and Cognitive Psychology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 2007. His primary research interest is the effects of nicotine and smoking on cognitive and emotional information processing. Brett is also interested in using fMRI to investigate the neurocognitive basis of addiction.

Avery joined the lab as a Research Technician in October, 2005. She has a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from Virginia Tech. Avery is the project coordinator on all current fMRI studies.
Rachel Kozink
R&D Engineer

Rachel joined the lab in November, 2005. She has a B.S. in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Virginia Tech. Rachel is conducting fMRI data processing and analysis, development of eye-tracking systems, and providing computer programming support.
Aislinn Jobes, B.A.
Behavioral Technician

Aislinn joined the lab as a Behavioral Technician in July, 2008. She has a B.A. in Psychology from Wake Forest University. Aislinn is the technician on current fMRI studies.

Former Staff

Jim Liu
Jim was a senior biomedical engineering student at Duke. He graduated in Spring 2006 after working in the lab since 2003. While in the lab, Jim specialized in ROI drawing, fMRI data processing, and computer programming. Jim went to work for Microsoft in Redmond, Washington.
Amy Gordon, M.T.S.
Research Technician
Amy joined the lab as a Research Technician in June, 2005. She has a B.A. in Psychology from Mississippi State University and a Masters of Theological Studies from Vanderbilt University Divinity School. Amy was the primary coordinator for all lab studies.
Berry Hiott, M.A.
Research Technician
Berry joined the lab as a Research Technician in 2002. He completed a Master's in Psychology from Wake Forest University during his tenure in the lab. He is currrently working at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.
