Notes:
When “talkies” came on the scene, there was a period again when film found that it had to lean on theater, perhaps also on the new medium of radio, to learn how to deal with language. For that period “talkies” were indeed “talky” to the degree that today “talky” is one of the harshest criticisms that can be leveled against a film. The understanding has been reached that in these particular visual media, images come first, must stand on their own, must compel, and must be complete--without the need of language to explain or complement them. Whether one approves of that especially or not, it seems to work for film. The test is defiance, which almost always fails.
