It is estimated that 20% of the time that a television is on in the house, no one is in the room watching it. This may be explained in part by the “television as hearth” phenomenon, that warm colorful focus of family relaxation. One does not have to be staring at the hearth all day just because it is “on.” The “television as radio” phenomenon may explain as much, where television is employed as company, and where information transmittal is still largely verbal and not visual.
