Rather it was meant to represent the minimum amount of phonetic information necessary to remind the latined reader of the word, the primary reality of which was in speech and in not writing. An unlatined person would have a great deal of difficulty deciphering the abbreviations, and a deaf person looking at this for the first time would be justified in questioning whether the culture represented by this writing was actually using a phonetic system at all. In this respect, manuscripts of this kind were as firmly rooted on the oral culture as they were in the literate.
