Rachel devoted her life to community service through her career, her volunteer activities, and her empathy for all people. To honor her life and legacy, the Rachel Haberkern Sherman Memorial Scholarship has been established at Duke University. It will be awarded annually to a Duke student who shares Rachel's powerful personal commitment to service. Please help us to honor Rachel’s memory by inspiring and enabling talented young adults to embrace their commitment to community service.
Scholarship Criteria
• Recipients of the Rachel Haberkern Sherman Memorial Scholarship will be Duke undergraduate students, preferably women, who exhibit an unmistakable passion for community service and who share Rachel’s desire to make the world a better place through their energy and dedication. These students will be identified by their extraordinary commitment to activities through DukeEngage and/or the Duke Community Service Center.
Timeline
• There is no deadline for contributions to the Rachel Haberkern Sherman Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship endowment account will be open in perpetuity, and the scholarship will forever remain a part of Duke University.
• Thanks to the generosity of Duke University's $100 million Financial Aid Initiative Challenge, gifts and pledges made through December 31, 2008 will be matched dollar-for-dollar. In other words, to double the size of your gift to the scholarship, simply enter a pledge now and then pay by June 30, 2009 or throughout subsequent years.
• Because the Rachel Haberkern Sherman Memorial Scholarship has now surpassed the $250,000 minimum, the first scholarship will be awarded to an exemplary Duke student in August 2009.

Goal
• We—the friends and family of Rachel Haberkern Sherman—had set a goal of raising at least $250,000 during 2008 in order to award the first scholarship to a deserving student in 2009-2010. As of November 2008, we have together raised $344,812, which will be matched by the Duke Financial Aid Initiative Challenge for a current total of $689,624. Thank you!
• In future years, we hope that you will join us in continuing to build toward the long-term goal of raising $1 million for the Rachel Haberkern Sherman Memorial Scholarship.
Thank you for honoring Rachel through your support.
