Television
Television, for the most part, still sucks. The links I have below are for cancelled or soon to be cancelled shows.
I'm watching 24 and Heroes. Both are excellent but most of what else is out there doesn't interest me. I'll watch Stargate SG1 until they kill it. I'll keep up with Stargate: Atlantis despite the rumors I hear about cast changes. The Dresden Files hasn't grabbed me and Battlestar Galactica has always been a mixed pleasure. Part of the problem is I don't have time to watch much television and so am selective. I'd still rather read a book.
Movies
I have a fundamentalist Christian background. What does that have to do
with movies you ask? By the age of sixteen I had seen a couple of Disney
flicks at a theater. You know. . . separation from worldly things and
Hollywood was about as worldly as you got. By the way, this separation
did not extend, amazingly enough, to television. I avidly watched old
classics, TV movies, and edited theactrical releases. At sixteen I got a
job and a car. I started going to matinees in the afternoon. I went
lots.
I'm not going to list all the movies I like. It would take up too damn
much space. I will tell you I have a fondness for John Ford,
Howard
Hawks, John Wayne, Japanese samurai flicks, Akira
Kurasawa, John Woo, Sam Peckinpah, and violent action films that have
style. For an idea of what I call style I refer you to the
films of Mr. Woo and/or Mr. Peckinpah.
By the way, my fondness for violent films has not turned me into a mass
murdering, wife beating, serial killer.
A few years back I did start picking my favorite film of the year.
