Politics
An image of Lady Liberty holding an assault weapon in salute.

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."
Thomas Jefferson

The Second Amendment is about two things as far as I'm concerned.

The first is protection of family, property, and self. I have a right and a responsibility to defend my life and the lives of those for whom I care. It would be nice to relinquish that to the police, but from a practical standpoint that is neither safe nor wise. Too much can happen in the time it takes law enforcement to arrive. I'm a cop. I know.

The second reason is politics. I believe firearms are politics. They serve as reminder to those in power that it is we, the people, who run the show. The right to keep and bear arms was intended to provide the people with the ability to just say no to government and make it stick. The simple fact is that you can't make an individual with a gun do a damn thing he or she doesn't want to. The most you can do is kill them.

Possessing a gun is a political act. This strikes me as why gun ownership is under attack in the United States and all over the world. Those in power, left and right, feel compelled to protect us from ourselves whether we want them to or not. They have to be in control. God forbid we control our own lives, tell the busybodies to go to hell, and have a means of giving directions.

Guns are politics pure and simple. Nothing more. Those that say otherwise are just trying to change the subject by misleading their audience.

Now having said that, do I advocate the use of violence to achieve political or any other goals? No. Even though I believe the above, I also think civilian ownership of firearms best serves as a reminder to those in political office just who is in charge. I'm also a Libertarian and will not initiate force against anyone. I believe self-defense is the only legitimate use of force, particularly deadly force. In matters political, the electoral process is to be preferred over violence as a method of change. So go and exercise your rights. VOTE, or the "I know what's best for you stupid" crowd will make your decisions for you.

Victim Disarmament

All these organization share in the goal of ending your right to own firearms through passage of victim disarmament legislation and the reshaping of social attitudes toward firearms. They work toward this end by misrepresenting facts and outright lies. Why the phrase "victim disarmament"? Laws designed to "control" firearms do not keep guns out of the hands of criminals or lower crime rates. They do make it harder or impossible for the law abiding to obtain the means by which they can defend themselves. Gun control laws disarm victims. Its not about safety or crime control. Its about people control. Know thine enemy. Resist, Oppose, Fight.
