THE STRAITS TIMES WORLD CUP 2002 - DAY 25

THOUSANDS of World Cup fans will be able to gather at the Padang to cheer on

South Korea and Germany tonight.

A 7x5-metre projection screen will be set up in the middle of the field, at

the Singapore Recreation Club end of the Padang, to allow fans to catch the

match live.

The screening is part of The Great Kick Off, a six-day soccer carnival

organised by event and media company Hana Creations.

More than 50 booths have been set up to sell food and drinks, and soccer

merchandise. The carnival will also include a five-a-side soccer tournament

and music performances.

Hana Creations hopes to draw at least 4,000 people to each game. There are

four World Cup games left.

University student Jeremy Lim is excited about watching matches at the

Padang. 'I'm looking for a feverish atmosphere,' he said. 'I want to watch

with people of a similar passion.'

The carnival will open from noon to midnight today to Friday, and from 10am

to midnight during the weekend.

In comparison, Liat Towers telecasts World Cup matches live on its outdoor,

6x4-metre screen.

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea, together with Ngee Ann City, is also

organising a screening of the semi-final match today at Civic Plaza, Ngee Ann

City at 7.15pm.

Fans can also catch the match live at the atrium of Funan the IT Mall, Suntec

City and outside the Raffles Place MRT station. - Gabriel Chen
