At this point, Peter Pinnell Jr. is old enough to show up in the records, and does. Care has to be taken to distinguish between Peter Jr. and Peter Sr. The fact that both are married to women named Ann or Nancy, and that Nancy is a nickname for Ann, doesn't help! Also, both men have sons named Lewis who are about the same age (this is more of a problem in Missouri records). Peter Sr. married Ann or Nancy Yarborough, daughter of Ambrose Yarborough (see SC notes). Peter Jr. married Ann or Nancy Sullivant, daughter of Claibourne Sullivant, who also moved from lower Greenville Co., SC to Caldwell Co., KY (see biography of Claibourne Sullivant Pinnell, son of Peter Jr.) (need citation). Despite the possible Ann/Nancy confusion, it seems that Peter Jr.'s wife usually used "Ann" or "Anna" while Peter Sr.'s wife usually used "Nancy".
We don't know what the relationship is between Peter Sr. and Peter Jr. Contemporary records refer to them as Peter Jr. and Peter Sr., but that does not necessarily mean father and son. They could have been uncle and nephew (my favorite theory). Given their close geographical association, in SC, KY and MO, it seems unlikely that they are unrelated.
Three factors allow us to distinguish the two men while they lived in Kentucky. The 1810 census locates thems in different, though adjacent counties, and shows that the Peter in Caldwell County was in a younger age bracket than the Peter in Christian County. The 1815 tax list of Caldwell County (both Peters were in Caldwell by this time) refers to one of them as Peter Jr. Finally, when they sold land, Peter Jr.'s wife Ann releases dower and Peter Sr.'s wife Nancy releases dower. Following is a summary of census, tax and land records for the two men. This represents my analysis of the data. See the other sections for fuller information, without (much) interpretation.
Note: the tax lists describe land as "entered by," "surveyed for," and "patented by" various people. These are abbreviated E, S, & P.

Peter Pinnell gives bond to John Jones for 150 acres on land on Flynns Fork of Tradewater. (He received the patent for the land in 1819, gave a power of attorney to sell the land to John Jones in 1821, and the deed was actually executed in 1826.) | |
