[This section is definitely under construction - I'm just sticking bits of evidence in here as I come across them. I'll organize it later.]
Once you start looking for it, there is a substantial amount of evidence that this family (group of families?) used Pinnell interchangeably with Pinion. I have found examples as early as the 1790's and as late as the 1870's.
Turner Pinnell's Estate Papers
Order for appraisal: 4 Feb 1833, due by 4 April, to Nathan Berry, Addam
Jones & Jacob Reace.
Top half of form filled out by John Watson "Ordinary of said district," who
has done most of the paperwork so far, on 4 Feb. 1833. Top half refers
to Turner Pinion & Elizabeth Pinion. Bottom half
filled out on 8 Feb. 1833 by W.A. Williams, Justice of the Peace, and refers
to Turner Pinnell and Elizabeth Pinnell.
"First return and final settlement of the Estate of Turner Pinnell or Pinion made this 5 Oct. 1840" $9601.25 1/2 (after fees, etc. deducted). "amt to be distributed among a widow and 6 children, widow thirds, amt equal among six children." Widow's third = $3200.41 3/4, each child's part = $1066.80 1/2. Signed by Eliz. Pinnell (her mark) March 22, 1841.
