Concluding
Remark: The Art of Organization.
We can perhaps best prepare the ground
for Deleuze's and Negri's
discussions
of negation with an artistic example.
Guernica, a small
town in
northeastern Spain, was the most ancient site of veneration in
the
Basque world, the center of Basque cultural traditions. From a
European
perspective, one might think that the Enlightenment had been
slow to
reach rural Spain, but the Basque community, in its cultural
isolation,
was perhaps the final trace on the continent of the ancient
world. The town was bombarded in 1937 by eighteen
German planes in an
action
to test the destructive force of the new Nazi war machine. The
result
was devestation on a scale never before witnessed. The scene
seems
to be set for a dialectic of enlightenment: the spiritual center
of the
ancient world is negated by the most advanced modern
technology.
