I attended Marietta College for 8 semesters, starting in the Fall of 2004 as a freshman and graduating in the Spring of 2008 with a Bachelor's of Science degree with a double major in mathematics and physics. I ran both cross country and track and field all 4 years as an undergraduate. Although the mile is still my favorite race, the 3000m steeplechase turned out to be my most competitive race as a collegiate athlete. My form is awful, but it seems most runners aren't much better than I am at getting over the barriers, so I gutted it out and scored a few points at the outdoor Ohio Athletic Conference meets over the years. Beyond that I just tried to contribute as best I could as a cross country runner over 8000m courses and as a track athlete over a variety of distances, particularly as a distance leg on various relay teams during the indoor season.
Marietta College reinstated its intercollegiate cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field programs in the fall of 2002. I had the great privilege of coming into the program at a time when I was able to contribute to the growth and success of the team. Our team is now improving by leaps and bounds, with more talented young runners, throwers, jumpers, and hurdlers coming into the program each year than came in the previous year. It is very exciting to watch the team continue to improve.
Although I was never the most talented runner, I had sufficient talent to run at a reasonably competitive level within our conference as an undergraduate, which kept running fun, and, more importantly, gave me the opportunity to discover that I love to run. I enjoy the hard work and discipline required to improve upon previous personal bests by sticking to a long-term training plan. I love the feeling of being healthy and being able to cruise along. I enjoy fighting against fatigue and internal laziness in order to hit faster times in races and speedwork sessions. I just love to run. As such, I am continuing to train myself in an effort to run faster. I hope to never give it up. As I continue to enter races, I will post the results of my efforts. I imagine they will primarily be road races, but I also enjoy running track races, so any of those will be posted as well.
I am currently trying to increase my ability to hold a decent pace over distances longer than 2 miles. Historically speaking, my body tends to break down after 2 miles of hard running. This is unacceptable. Improving in this area is my present training focus. My training involves a gradual ascent in mileage and some longer speedwork. I expect this effort to occupy me for the next several years. I hope to improve my personal record in the 10k by as much as possible. We will see how that goes... historically speaking, I hate the 10k... with a passion.
I have compiled lists of the top five individual performances by Marietta College athletes for every track and field event and cross country race distance. As I only have access to data from the fall of 2004 through the present, performances from that time span are the only ones currently included in the list. As the programs were only reinstated in the 2002-2003 academic year, this is not too bad, and the top five lists provided should be very nearly the same as completed post-reinstatement top five lists. If anyone has complete data for the previous years, I would be very interested in obtaining it to complete the lists back to the reinstatement of the programs.
The top-five lists are meant to serve as motivational tools for current Marietta College cross country and track and field athletes inasmuch as they might strive to perform well enough as to be included in the lists. It is also hoped that by maintaining these lists, a sense of the history of the reborn programs will develop amongst the current athletes in the programs, and that this sense of community will also serve to motivate and inspire them to remain dedicated to their training regimens and to the Marietta College cross country and track and field programs.
Top 5 ListsThe following is a table of my Personal Records (PRs) at various race distances. My lifetime dream times are 2:00.99 in the 800m, 3:59.99 in the 1500m, 4:19.99 in the 1 Mile, 8:59.99 in the 3000m, 15:34.99 in the 5000m, and 33:59.99 in the 10000m. For each such time that I manage to achieve or better I will die a happy man.
