Re: Meetings with Mikki Sager in Kinston
Mikki and I met with Carla Kennedy to discuss further work on the River Communities in Recovery project. Carla gave us information about the Comprehensive Land Use Plan for Lenoir County, including the subdivision that will be adjacent to Tull’s Mill Pond. The infrastructure grants for this and other housing developments require 20% green space and 50% flood victim ownership. We talked about maintenance and liability issues that affect the recreational use of green infrastructure.
Later we met with Bill Ellis from Lenoir County Parks and Recreation and Admiral Paul Busick of The Global TransPark (GTP) Authority. We discussed how the recreation department could use donations from the GTP Authority to educate residents and visitors about the environment. We also discussed how my project could evaluate future wetlands mitigation sites while attending to recreational uses. Bill Ellis gave us a tour of the nature center and future planetarium. In interesting and high quality exhibits, the nature center presents live animals important to the ecology and culture of the region. The construction of the center involved an impressive mix of community participation and creative planning.
