grading

Notice

Grad students: Where grading is concerned (and much else too) no one should expect absolute consistency from one professor to another. Nevertheless, owing partly to Graduate School policy and partly to departmental will, CLST grades grad courses, in effect, on a scale of A to C. My own view of the grading scale follows.

Scale

CLST A-C (if you get X)
  10-pt A-F (think of it as Y)
A+
97-100 Excellent work; ideas are insightful, original, ambitious, exciting; command of fundamentals is excellent (e.g. Latin, Greek, English prose, research methods); may tackle especially challenging scholarly puzzles. Work shows considerable promise of scholarly excellence. A+ 97-100
A
93-96 Very good work; solid command of fundamentals; shows facility for formulating insightful and original arguments, and defending them with clear, compelling scholarly prose (written or oral). A 93-96
  A- 90-92
A-
90-92 Good, solid "B"-to-"B+" work; shows decent command of fundamentals--work to do, but a solid foundation from which to do it. May have insightful, even original, ideas, but some difficulty expressing them. B+ 87-89
  B 83-86
B+
87-89 Adequate; work meets the minimum stated requirements and expectations; may demonstrate minimal competence in fundamentals; may suffer from weak intellectual framework, thin evidentiary support, weak use of scholarly resources, etc. Keep at it; you seem to be on the right track. B- 80-82
  C+ 77-79
B
83-86 Acceptable as graduate-level work, but less than fully adequate. May still suffer from weak command of fundamentals, significant difficulty with formulation of arguments and clear expression of ideas. C 73-76
  C- 70-72
B-
80-82 Barely acceptable as graduate-level work. May warrant a "C" but for exceptional effort. D+ 67-69
  D 63-66
  D- 60-62
C or lower
<80 Unacceptable as graduate-level work; may be characterized by inadequate command of fundamentals, absence of ideas or critical thought. F <60

Late

Except in extraordinary circumstances, I do not accept late papers or grant incompletes. Any papers arriving after 5pm on the due date will receive a zero. If you would like to make the case for extraordinary circumstances, I am more than happy to discuss; just drop by.
